Potluck is a place for friends to hang out and talk about interesting things.
We love exploring the web and finding great stuff to share and talk about with our friends. In fact, these conversations are our favorite part of the internet! But we don’t always get to have them as often as we could.
Let’s say you find 10 great things on the web in a day. For every one that gets sent to a friend, shared on Facebook or Twitter, or turned into a blog post, we have a hunch that those other nine don’t make it anywhere. Bummer.
Why not? On most platforms, what you share is tied to your identity. Your name and avatar shows up next to everything you post. This means you have to worry about building your personal brand, entertaining your audience, or — even worse! — spamming your friends. (And no one wants to be That Guy.)
With all these worries, it’s easy to forget about the simple pleasure of sharing something great with friends. We hope Potluck reminds you.
That’s a tall order. Like all startups, we’re figuring out what makes Potluck special as we go along based on our guts and how you use it.
What we can do is share a few of the assumptions we’ve made as we’ve built it. Hopefully, that’ll give you a better idea of how we’re thinking about things.
Every time you find something great on the web, save it to Potluck. Seriously. Every time. We designed Potluck so you never have to worry about being That Guy (or Girl), because when your friends browse the Potluck feed, they’ll only see topics and titles — not your name and avatar. Then, if they’re interested in what you saved, too, they can click through and talk about it with you.
What you see in the Potluck feed is determined by your friends’ activity — you see things they’ve saved or are talking about. The fun of Potluck is the fun of a real-world party: it gives you a chance to talk to your friends and their friends, too. And just like at those parties, shared interests are a great way to make new friends. You probably have more in common with your friends (and their friends) than you think!
After you save something great to Potluck, we make it easy to hang out and talk about it. Why? We think people find and share content on the web because they want to talk about it with people they know and trust. We built Potluck to make doing that as simple, low-friction, and anxiety-free as possible.
We’re the team who brought you Branch.
Nope! Our team’s goal is to bring great conversations to the web. So far, we’ve built Branch, a platform for hosting and publishing curated conversations. We’re really proud of its success as a publishing tool, but we also think there’s more work to do.
Conversations are all different, so instead of building a one-size-fits-all conversation tool, we’re building products that reflect those differences, too.
My bad! Send me a note at firstname.lastname@example.org. Talk to you soon.
